Abstract

Adaptation and coping capacity are fundamental components of professional nursing practice due to constant exposure to stressful situations, complex healthcare demands, and emotional challenges inherent to the work environment. Strengthening these capacities promotes the well-being of healthcare professionals and contributes to the quality of care provided. The objective of this study was to determine the adaptation and coping capacity of nursing personnel at a hospital in the city of Pilar, Paraguay, during 2025. A quantitative, descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study with a non-experimental design was conducted. The sample consisted of 38 nursing professionals who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using the Coping and Adaptation Processing Scale (CAPS), based on Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including absolute frequencies and percentages. The participants demonstrated a predominantly favorable adaptation and coping capacity. In the factors Resourceful and Focused, Alert Process, and Knowing and Relating, responses related to problem-solving, action planning, emotional control, and acceptance of problematic situations predominated. Furthermore, a low frequency of behaviors associated with emotional blockage, confusion, and giving up in the face of difficulties was observed. The Systematic Processing factor also showed favorable results, although with a lower predominance compared to the other factors evaluated. The nursing personnel demonstrated an adequate capacity for adaptation and coping in response to workplace demands, highlighting the use of adaptive strategies focused on problem-solving and emotional regulation. These findings represent a strength for professional performance and provide useful evidence for the development of institutional strategies aimed at promoting occupational well-being and the mental health of nursing personnel.
